Andrew Grey has a way of integrating his characters into the communities where they live especially if there have been other tales he has spun in the same neighborhood. In this one he returns the farmland near to his own current hometown, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to bring us veterinarian and dog rescuer Mitchell Brannigan and his new neighbor Beau Phister and his three-month-old adopted daughter Jennifer whose mom was Beau's best friend but was killed in an auto accident.That's enough to give you an idea that things are going to be complicated here, and in a sense they are because once Mitchell and Beau become friendly much of the book takes us into their fears of developing a relationship based on their most previous, and abusive, experiences. Mitchell is five years from dumping his ex, and Beau has divorced his but is encumbered by his ex's stalking mode and reluctance to liquidate their assets.This situation could have bogged me down but Grey is clever enough to use baby Jennifer and Mitchell's rescued mutts front and center and it works so well that I just kept reading until a surprising development leads to some angst but eventual HEA (this is an Andrey Grey novel after all).Loved it.
